Enrique Flores

Biografía

Education:Flores studied painting and printmaking under Juan Alcazar, at the Taller Libre de Grafica, in Oaxaca. Exhibitions:Over the past decades, Flores has participated in group shows in Mexico, El Salvador, San Diego, Missoula,, and Philadelphia, as well as solo shows throughout Mexico. In 1990 his work was included in a group show of Oaxacan artists, Life, Legend and Dreams, which opened at the University of Arizona Museum of Art in Tucson and toured to the Heard Museum in Phoenix, as well to California. About Enrique Flores’ prints:Enrique’s work is equally influenced by life in a small rural village and by such artists as Rufino Tamayo, Diego Rivera, and Rudolfo Morales. His luxurious use of ink to define stylized forms responds both to the muralist traditions of revolutionary Mexico, and to his own experience as a painter of gouache on bark papers. Flores has been a major contributor to the Oaxaca School of Art, especially in the style of “magical realism.” People, farm animals, and every day objects, such as bicycles and the constellations, weave together in a seamless narrative style. People fly, animals put on ancient masks, and musical notes become physical creatures. His stories roll around within the frame, retracing their fantastic steps back to deceptively simple moments of rural life.
