José María Velasco

Biografía

José María Velasco was an internationally renowned Mexican artist whose landscape paintings helped shape the visual identity of Mexico in the 19th century. Trained under Italian painter Eugenio Landesio at Mexico City’s Academia de San Carlos, Velasco brought together rigorous academic technique with an almost scientific attentiveness to geology and botany. His panoramic renderings of the Valley of Mexico combine natural beauty, industrialization, and cultural symbolism, including cactus, eagle, and volcano motifs, to reflect Mexico’s past, present, and emerging national identity. Velasco was the recipient of numerous awards in his lifetime, including the gold medal at the Mexican National Exposition of Bellas Artes (1874 and 1876), the gold medal at the Philadelphia International Exposition (1876), and a medal at the Paris Universal Exposition (1889). His works are held in prominent collections including the Museo Nacional de Arte, Museo Nacional de Historia, and the National Gallery, London.
