Sebastián (b. 1947, Ciudad Camargo, Chihuahua) is a renowned Mexican sculptor best known for his large-scale works that encourage viewer interaction, making the audience an integral part of the experience. Often regarded as one of the most internationally recognized contemporary sculptors, he has created over 200 urban monumental sculptures worldwide. Sebastián began his studies in 1965 at the Academy of San Carlos, later continuing his education at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). His recognition grew early, winning first place in the 1965 Annual Exhibition at UNAM. Over his career, he has held more than 120 solo exhibitions across multiple countries, including Germany, Brazil, the United States, and Japan. His sculptural work is grounded in a constructive approach, blending artistic practice with scientific disciplines such as mathematics, geometry, topology, and crystallography. Sebastián’s work is a unique contribution to Mexican and Latin American sculpture, pushing the boundaries of form and space.
